Films About Dance


I believe that every blogger who wants to write about dance should have this list! lol :D

If we love to dance we have watched those films over and over again hoping that one day we too could be like Patrick Swayze from 'Dirty Dancing'... bad boy type with great dance moves and vibrating charm.

Never less, I hope to finish this list fairly quick. I am going to add short note to each movie title. So we all more less will know what the movie is about.

Dirty Dancing - 1987
In 1963, Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey), a sweet daddy's girl, goes with her family to a resort in upstate New York's Catskill Mountains. Baby has grown up in privileged surroundings and all expect her to go on to college, join the Peace Corps and save the world before marrying a doctor, just like her father. Unexpectedly, Baby becomes infatuated with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), a man whose background is vastly different from her own. Baby lies to her father to get money to pay for an illegal abortion for Johnny's dance partner. She then fills in as Johnny's dance partner and it is as he is teaching her the dance routine that they fall in love. It all comes apart when Johnny's friend falls seriously ill after her abortion and Baby gets her father, who saves the girl's life. He then learns what Baby has been up to, who with and worse - that he funded the illegal abortion. He bans his daughter from any further association with "those people". In the first deliberately willful action of her life, Baby later sneaks out to see Johnny - ostensibly to apologize for her father's rudeness - and ends up consummating her relationship with Johnny. A jealous fellow vacationer sees Baby sneaking out of Johnny's bungalow the next morning, and in an act of retribution, tells management that he is responsible for a theft the evening before, knowing he would not furnish his real whereabouts.


Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights - 2004
In November 1958, the American teenager Katey Miller (Romola Garai) moves with her parents and her younger sister to Havana. Her father is an executive of Ford expatriated to Cuba, and Katey is an excellent high school senior student that misses her friends. The family is lodged in a fancy hotel, where Katey accidentally meets the local teenage waiter Javier Suarez (Diego Luna). Later she sees Javier dancing in a public square and they become friends, but he is fired from the hotel because her acquaintances have seen them together. Katey invites Javier to participate of a Latin Ballroom Contest in the local Palace club to help him to raise some money, and she secretly meets him in the La Rosa Negra nightclub for rehearsals. Later they fall in love for each other in times of revolution.








Lambada - 1990
Kevin 'Blade' Laird (J. Eddie Peck) is a Beverly Hills school teacher by day and a mystery man by night. Using his lambada dance moves to first earn the kid's respect and acceptance, Kevin then teaches them academics. But when a jealous student exposes Kevin's double life, his two worlds collide, threatening his job and reputation.















Strictly Ballroom - 1992
Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) is a champion caliber ballroom dancer, but much to the chagrin of the Australian ballroom dance community, Scott believes in dancing "his own steps". Fran (Tara Morice) is a beginning dancer and a bit of an ugly duckly who has the audacity to ask to be Scott's partner after his unorthodox style causes his regular partner to dance out of his life. Together, these two misfits try to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championships and show the Ballroom Confederation that they are wrong when they say, "there are no new steps!"












Dance With Me - 1998
Young Cuban Rafael (Chayanne) just buried his mother, and comes to Houston to meet his father John (Kris Kristofferson) for the first time. The difficult part is that John doesn't know he is Rafael's father. John runs a dance studio, and everyone prepares for the World Open Dance Championship in Las Vegas. It soon becomes clear Rafael is a very good dancer, and Ruby (Vanessa Williams) is the biggest hope for the studio at the championship.













 Shall We Dance - 2004
A romantic comedy where a bored, overworked Estate Lawyer John Clark (Richard Gere), upon first sight of a beautiful instructor Paulina (Jennifer Lopez) and signs up for ballroom dancing lessons. Where after a while John will take part in Chicagos biggest dance competition with Paulina as a dance partner.














Step Up - 2006
Late teen Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) is a directionless young man, despite the care provided by his loving foster family. With his best friend Marcus "Mac" Carter (Damaine Radcliff) and Mac's younger brother "Skinny" Carter (De'Shawn Washington), Tyler spends his time stealing cars, playing pick-up games of basketball, and attending house parties where hip-hop is king. After he is caught and convicted of vandalism, Tyler is sentenced to community service at the scene of the crime: the Maryland School of the Arts. Tyler feels out of his element among most of the students at the school. But after her dance partner Andrew (Tim Lacatena) suffers an injury, classically trained dance student Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan - Tatum), who is preparing for her potentially career starting senior showcase, asks Tyler, who she spied doing an impromptu hip-hop dance out on the street, to replace Andrew in her showcase for rehearsal purposes only. Getting the reluctant OK from the school's director, Miss Gordon (Rachel Griffiths). This partnership begins Tyler's association with the artistic side of the school and the students. Although their partnership has its many bumps, Nora helps Tyler see his life in a different way, while Tyler makes Nora examine how she sees her craft. Their professional partnership and burgeoning personal relationship is threatened by Nora's self-centered boyfriend, Brett Dolan (Josh Henderson), and Nora's commitment to Andrew as a dance partner. Tyler also feels like he's being pulled in two directions, especially as Mac sees him leaving his old friends behind him. An incident concerning Skinny makes both Tyler and Mac examine in which direction their lives should lead.


Step Up 2: The Streets - 2008
Following the death of her parents, teen-aged Andie West (Briana Evigan) is living with her mother's best friend, Sarah (Sonja Sohn). Andie, who doesn't care about school, is trying to figure out where she fits in in life. The only thing she loves is dancing with her street crew, the 410, led by Tuck (Black Thomas). The 410 are the most notorious of the street crews in Baltimore and are wanted by the police for their acts of vandalism and public mischief. Sarah threatens to send Andie to live with relatives in Texas unless she cleans up her act, which includes ending her association with the 410 and trying harder at school. Andie's neighborhood friend, Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum), convinces Andie to audition for entry into the Maryland School of the Arts (MSA), an institution which ended up turning his life around for the better. Andie passes the audition but isn't sure she fits in there. The school's director, Blake Collins (Will Kemp), isn't sure she fits in there either. Blake is a brilliant dancer but looks for conformity to his way. After learning that Andie's absences from rehearsals are due to her new association with MSA, Tuck kicks her out of the 410. Chase Collins (Robert Hoffman), a dance student at MSA and Blake's younger brother, convinces Andie to start her own street dance crew using all the dance misfits from MSA i.e. those that don't conform to Blake's way of thinking. This new association brings up a few conflicts within Andie, as her new dance crew tries to gain respect on the streets, especially among her old and judgmental friends, and as she and the crew try to hide the fact of what they're doing from Blake, who ultimately threatens expulsion from the school of anyone participating in the illegal street competitions.


Step Up 3D - 2010
After graduating high school from the Maryland School of the Arts (MSA), Moose (Adam G. Sevani), with his longtime BFF and fellow MSA alumnus Camille (Alyson Stoner), decides to "grow up" by quitting dance and becoming an engineering student at NYU, much to the delight of his parents. An impromptu street dance battle in New York City in which Moose is involved against Kid Darkness of the renowned House of Samurai dance crew catches the eye of Luke (Rick Malambri), the leader of the House of Pirates dance crew. Luke convinces Moose to join his crew, which is comprised of a group of misfits who each has his/her own individual dance style. Luke and his crew live in what is called the vault - a converted warehouse - which has a living and dance rehearsal space upstairs and a dance club downstairs. Luke has his own personal reasons for creating the vault and helping these dancers. However, he is five months behind in the mortgage payments and the bank could foreclose at any second. Luke believes winning the $100,000 grand prize in the inaugural World Jam Championships would solve his financial problems and save the vault. The Samurais, led by Luke's nemesis Julien (Joe Sloughter), are their main competition. Beyond the prestige, Julien has his own motive for wanting to win and ruin the Pirates. Luke is also trying to recruit Natalie (Sharni Vinson), a recent attendee to the downstairs club and what Luke will find out - Julien's sister. In getting to know Luke, Natalie tries to get him to follow his own dreams. But Natalie's involvement with the Pirates may threaten its existence. Meanwhile, Moose is trying to balance his secret involvement with the Pirates against his commitments to school and to Camille, who secretly wants to be more than just a platonic BFF to Moose. But Camille may be able to take only so much neglect from Moose before even their BFF status is placed into jeopardy.


Step Up 4: Miami Heat - 2012                                                         
The Mob sets the dancing against the vibrant backdrop of Miami. Emily (Kathryn McCormik) arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer and soon falls in love with Sean (Ryan Guzman), a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs, called "The Mob". When a wealthy business man threatens to develop The Mob's historic neighborhood and displace thousands-of people, Emily must work together with Sean and The Mob to turn their performance art into protest dance art, and risk losing their dreams to fight for a greater cause.



Step Up 5: All In - 2014
Sean (Ryan Guzman) brings his dance crew known as The Mob to Los Angeles. After a while The Mob decides it's time to go back to Miami but Sean decides to stay. He learns of a dance competition in Las Vegas where the winner will get a three year dance contract. Sean needs a new crew, so he asks fellow dancer Moose (Adam G. Sevani) for help who introduces him to Andie (Briana Evigan), another friend and dancer who got injured a few years ago and is now ready to get back on the floor. He recruits some other friends and they move to Las Vegas as Lmmental. When they get there, they discover that The Mob is there too, what is very touchy for Sean.




Saturday Night Fever - 1977
Nineteen-year-old Brooklyn native Tony Manero (John Travolta) lives for Saturday nights at the local disco club, where he's a king, thanks to his stylish moves on the dance floor. However, at home, Tony fights constantly with his father and has to compete with his family's starry-eyed view of his older brother, a priest. Nor can he find satisfaction at his dead-end job at a paint store. However, things begin to change when he spies Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) in the disco and starts training with her for the club's dance competition. Stephanie dreams of the world beyond Brooklyn, and her plans to move to the big city just over the bridge soon change Tony's life forever.



Flashdance - 1983
Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) is a female dynamo: steel worker by day, exotic dancer by night. Her dream is to get into a real dance company/ballet school, and with encouragement from her boss/boyfriend, she may get her chance. The city of Pittsburgh co-stars.



StreetDance 3D - 2010
London's venerable Royal Dance School is in a soulless slump under uninspired choreographer-director Helena (Charlotte Rampling), so chairman Harding warns that failure to win Royal ballet auditions will result in dismissals. In a desperate attempt to inspire passion into brilliant Tomas's (Richard Winsor) technically gifted final class of five, she strikes a deal: free use of the splendid accommodation in exchange for Tomas's five incorporation into the street-dance team Jay-0-2, which is training for the national final in a few weeks and just lost its founding leader, so challenging reigning champions The Surge looks hopeless under Jay's (Ukweli Roach) unpractical lover, Carly (Nichola Burley). Perfect gentleman Tomas makes it all work better then anyone hoped and becomes Carly's new lover.



StreetDance 2 - 2012
After suffering humiliation by the crew Invincible, street dancer Ash (Falk Hentschel), with help of a friend - Eddie (George Sampson) looks to gather the best dancers from around the world for a rematch. On the way to final match he is meeting beautiful salasa dancer, Eva (Sofia Boutella), for whom he is starting to feel sth more than a friendship.



Take The Lead - 2006
In New York, the polite dance instructor Pierre Dulaine (Antonio Banderas) sees a black teenager vandalizing the car of the director of a public school and on the next day he volunteers to teach ballroom dance to students to show them through dance what respect, dignity, self-confidence, trust and teamwork means. The reluctant director Augustine James offers the troublemakers that are in detention expecting Pierre to give-up of his intentions. Pierre struggles against the prejudice and ignorance of the students, parents and other teachers, but wins his battle when the group accepts to compete in a ballroom dance contest.



Center Stage - 2000
The education of three young students Jodie (Amanda Schull), Eva (Zoe Saldana) and Maureen (Susan May Pratt), as they study at the American Ballet Academy. Life isn't what they expected at the esteemed ABA, and all three face problems along the road. Jodie doesn't have the "ideal" body for dancing, Eva doesn't have the right attitude, and Maureen doesn't have the heart. Along the way, they learn that love can be found in unlikely places, and dancing should be a passion, not a duty. 



Center Stage: Turn It Up - 2008
A self-trained dancer Kate Parker (Rachele Brookie Smith) from the streets of Detroit makes her way into the most prestigious ballet academy in New York.

 

Save The Last Dance - 2001
Sara (Julia Stiles) wants to be a ballerina, but her dreams are cut short by the sudden death of her mother. She moves in with her father, who she has not seen for a long time. He lives on the other side of town, in a predominantly Black neighborhood. She gets transferred to a new school where she is one of the few White students there. She becomes friends with Chenille (Kerry Washington), and later, falls in love with Chenille's brother, Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) who helps her in achieving her dreams of becoming great dancer.



Save The Last Dance 2 - 2006
Sara (Iza Miko) joins Julliard in New York to fulfill her and her mother's dream of becoming the Prima ballerina of the school. She befriends her roommates, Zoe (Aubrey Dollar) and Miles (Columbus Short), who teach hip-hop classes. She has ballet classes with the rigid and famous Monique Delacroix (Jacqueline Bisset) that she idolizes - Monique requires full commitment, discipline and hard work from her students. When Miles, who is a composer, invites Sara to help him compose the music for the dance choreography Sara's passion for hip-hop is sparked and she also falls in love with Miles. When she is assigned to perform Giselle in an important event, she feels divided between the technique of the ballet and the creative work offered by Miles.









Black Swan - 2010
A ballet dancer, Nina (Natalie Portman) wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.

















Footloose - 1984
Classic tale of teenage rebellion and repression features a delightful combination of dance choreography and realistic and touching performances. When teenager Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small Midwestern town, he's in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. However, there is one small pleasure: Ariel Moore (Lori Singer), a troubled but lovely blonde with a jealous boyfriend. And a Bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed towns people.






Footloose - 2011
Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) moves from big-city Boston to a small southern town, where he lives with his aunt and uncle after his divorced mother's painful death from leukemia. An accident, in which five teenagers were killed after a night out, shocked the small town's community. The local councilmen and Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) reacted to the incident by banning loud music and dancing. Ren stands up to the outmoded ban and, in the process, falls in love with the Reverend's daughter Ariel Moore (Julianne Hough).












Honey - 2003
Honey (Jessica Alba) is a 22 years old sexy, tough music video choreographer from New York City, who shakes up her life after her mentor gives her an ultimatum: sleep with him or be blacklisted within their industry.

Make It Happen - 2008
Embarking on a journey to fulfill her dreams as a dancer, a young girl from Indiana - Lauryn (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) discovers a new style of dance while working in a barlusque club, what will prove to be the source of both conflict and self-discovery.














Dance Flick - 2009
Street dancer Thomas Uncles (Damon Wayans Jr.) is from the wrong side of the tracks, but his bond with the beautiful Megan White (Shoshana Bush) might help the duo realize their dreams as the enter in the mother of all dance battles.
















Make Your Move - 2013
Donny's (Derek Hough) a cocky kid from New York who likes to dance. He goes to New Orleans and he unwittingly takes part in a criminal act. He is arrested and sent to jail. He gets out on parole and makes a living by dancing in the streets. But his parole officer tells him to stop it because he's not suppose to be where he goes to dance as part of his parole. The officer tells him to get a job but he only wants to dance. He decides to go back to New York even though he's not allowed to. He goes to his brother Nicky who has a club. He learns that Nicky (Wesley Jonathan) and his partner Kaz (Will Yun Lee) had a falling out when a rich guy convinced Kaz that he doesn't need Nicky. Nicky told Kaz that he's just using him to get to Kaz's sister - Aya (BoA) who is also a performer who is hoping an agent will take her as a client because she could be sent back to Japan where she is from. When Donny sees her, he can't help but be interested in her despite Nicky telling him not to go near her.






Stomp The Yard - 2007
After the death of his brother, DJ (Columbus Short) an expert street dancer goes to Georgia to attend Truth University. But his efforts to get an education and woo the girl he likes are sidelined when he joins in his fraternity's effort to win a step dancing competition.
















You Got Served - 2004
Elgin (Marques Houston) and David (Omarion Grandberry) are best friends and leaders of the best dance crew in the area. When another town's top group challenges them to a battle, David and Elgin, along with their buddies, must create and perfect the most cutting edge moves in order to remain on top. The stakes are raised as friends double-cross each other and true motives are revealed. When the biggest battle comes to town, David and Elgin must work past their differences to prove that they are still the best crew on the streets.












You Got Served: Beat The World - 2011
Three dance crews prepare to do battle at the international Beat the World competition in Detroit. In the final showdown to become world champions lifelong hopes, dreams and even lives, are at stake.


















Love N' Dance - 2009
Polish romance/dance movie with original title -  'Kochaj i Tancz'. Starting journalist Hania (Iza Miko) with clear plans for future starts to write about dance project which taking it place in Warsaw. She meets there Wojtek (Mateusz Damiecki) very talented new dance student. Very soon Hania starts to be more and more interested in dancing, trying to find her real self but somewhere on the way she also starts to feel sth more for Wojtek.














Love N' Dancing - 2009
When a bored with life English teacher Jessica (Amy Smart) meets a West Coast Swing Champion dancer Jake (Tom Malloy), they have an instant connection. Both feel that the other can fulfill what was missing in their lives. But Jessica's got a workaholic fiancée who's not a bad guy when he's not on his Blackberry, and Jake's got his former partner Corinne, who just won't let Jake away from the dangling carrot of a rekindled relationship. Jake and Jessica must try to elude all obstacles, romantic or otherwise, to stay focused on the goal - winning the World Title and winning each other.












Billy Elliot - 2000
County Durham, during the endless, violent 1984 strike against the Thatcher closure of British coal mines. Widower Jackie Elliot (Gary Lewis) and his firstborn, fellow miner Tony (Jamie Draven), take a dim view of 11 year-old second son Billy's (Jamie Bell) poor record in boxing class, which worsens when they discover he sneakily transferred to the neighboring, otherwise girls-only-attended ballet class. Only one schoolmate, closet-gay Michael Caffrey (Stuart Wells), encourages Billy's desire, aroused by the teacher, who judged him talented enough for private lesson, to train and try out for the world-renowned Royal Ballet audition.










1 Chance 2 Dance - 2014
When a seventeen-year old aspiring dancer Gabby (Lexi Giovagnoli) is uprooted mid-semester of her senior year, she finds herself in a small East Coast high school where her heart will be divided between two boys, and she will have one last shot at making her big dream of becoming a dancer a reality.















Battle Of The Year - 2013
Battle of the Year attracts all the best teams from around the world, but the Americans haven't won in fifteen years. Dante (Laz Alonso) enlists Blake (Josh Holloway) to assemble a team of the best dancers and bring the Trophy back to America where it started.

Cuban Fury - 2014
Former teen salsa champion Bruce Garrett (Frost) is now an engineer. Now all Bruce needs to do is rediscover his inner passion and lose 15 Stone.
